How Search Is Changing — GEO & AEO Explained

A Bisque whitepaper for SME owners and marketing decision-makers

Executive summary

For twenty years, “being found online” meant one thing: ranking on Google. You optimised for it, paid for it, or both. That world is ending faster than most businesses realise.

A growing share of your customers no longer scroll a page of blue links. They ask an AI assistant a question and get a direct answer — often naming a handful of businesses, with no list to scroll and no second page to reach. If your business isn’t in that answer, you don’t rank tenth. You don’t exist.

This is the shift behind two acronyms you’ll hear more of: GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation). This paper explains them in plain English, why “get found online” was always the wrong goal, and what to actually do this year so AI tools recommend your business. It ends with a checklist. The only thing we ask is that you find out what the AI tools currently say about you.

Part 1 — How your customers now find businesses

Think about how you’ve looked something up recently. Increasingly, people don’t search and browse — they ask and receive. They type or speak a full question and get a composed answer that pulls from many sources and, crucially, often recommends specific businesses directly.

This is happening across AI assistants, AI-powered search results, and voice. The behaviour is different from old search in two ways that change everything for your business:

  1. The answer is the destination. There’s no page of ten options to weigh up. There’s an answer, sometimes naming two or three businesses. The “shortlist” is made for the customer, by the machine, before they ever click.
  2. The customer asks in their own words. Not “plumber Birmingham” but “who can fix a leaking boiler near me this weekend.” Real questions, full context — and the AI decides which business fits.

The practical consequence: appearing in that answer is the new front page. And it’s won differently from old-style rankings.

Part 2 — Why “get found online” was always the wrong goal

Here’s the uncomfortable truth that this shift makes impossible to ignore: visibility was never the point. Revenue was. Enquiries were. Customers were.

You can be visible in all the wrong places. You can rank for terms nobody buys on, sit in directories your customers never use, and collect impressions that never become enquiries. “Being visible” feels like progress and produces nothing. We’ve watched businesses pay for it for years.

The AI shift is brutal about this because it strips out the vanity. An AI assistant doesn’t show your customer ten options so you can claim you “appeared.” It names a few, or one. You’re either recommended — which leads directly to an enquiry — or you’re invisible. There’s no consolation prize for ranking on a page nobody sees anymore.

So the goal was never “get found.” It’s “get chosen — by the thing that now does the choosing.” That reframes what you should actually work on.

Part 3 — What makes an AI recommend a business

AI answer engines don’t think like the old ranking algorithms. They’re trying to give a good answer, which means recommending businesses they can be confident about. In practice, that rewards:

1. Clarity about what you do, for whom, and where. AI recommends businesses it understands. Vague, clever, or jargon-filled messaging that a human might forgive gets you skipped, because the machine can’t confidently place you. Plain, specific, consistent descriptions win.

2. Answering real questions directly. The content that gets surfaced is the content that genuinely answers the questions customers ask — the comparisons, the “is this right for me,” the honest “how much does it cost.” Not keyword-stuffed filler. Genuinely useful answers, because that’s what the AI is looking for to build its own.

3. Consistency everywhere you appear. Your name, location, services, and details should match across your site, listings, and profiles. Contradictions make an AI less confident, and a less-confident AI recommends someone else.

4. Evidence you’re real and trusted. Reviews, a credible website, third parties mentioning you. AI leans on signals that you’re a genuine, reliable business — because recommending a bad one reflects on it.

5. Structure it can read. Information laid out so a machine can extract it cleanly — clear headings, direct answers, proper technical markup. The easier you are to read, the easier you are to recommend.

Notice the through-line: every one of these is about being genuinely clear and genuinely useful. The era of gaming the system with volume and keywords is closing. The businesses that win are the ones that are actually easy to understand and worth recommending.

Part 4 — What to do this year

You don’t need to chase every new tool. You need to get the fundamentals right while most of your competitors are still asleep to the shift:

  • Say plainly what you do, for whom, and where — everywhere you appear, in the same words. Kill the clever-but-vague copy.
  • Answer your customers’ real questions in genuinely useful content — the questions they ask right before they buy.
  • Fix your consistency — same details across your site, Google profile, and every listing.
  • Build genuine trust signals — reviews, a credible site, real mentions.
  • Make it machine-readable — clean structure and proper markup so AI can extract your information without guessing.
  • Connect it to enquiries, not rankings — measure whether this produces business, not whether you “appear.” That’s the only score that counts.

Part 5 — The checklist: is your business visible to AI?

Run these. Each “no” is a gap a competitor can take.

  1. Ask the AI tools directly. Open the main AI assistants and ask, in a customer’s words, for a business that does what you do in your area. Are you named? If not, you have your answer.
  2. Is your one-line description clear and consistent across your site and every listing?
  3. Do you answer your customers’ real buying questions in content on your own site?
  4. Do your details match everywhere — name, location, services, contact?
  5. Do you have genuine, recent reviews and a credible web presence?
  6. Is your site structured so a machine can read it — clear headings, direct answers, proper markup?
  7. Are you measuring enquiries from this, not just “visibility”?

Mostly “yes”: you’re ahead of most SMEs. Several “no”s: that’s your roadmap — and the window to act is now, while it’s still an advantage rather than table stakes.

A note on doing this properly

GEO and AEO sound technical, and parts of them are. But most of the work is something your business should have done anyway: be genuinely clear about what you offer, genuinely useful to your customers, and consistent everywhere. The technical layer — structure, markup, machine-readability — is where it pays to get help, because small mistakes make you invisible to the very systems you’re trying to win. We tie all of it back to one number: enquiries. And you own what we build.

What to do with this

Do one thing today: open an AI assistant and ask it for a business like yours in your area. Whatever it says — naming you, naming a competitor, or fumbling — is the most useful five minutes you’ll spend on marketing this month. It tells you exactly where you stand in the search world your customers are already moving into.

Our free 30-minute audit will check what the AI tools currently say about you, where the gaps are, and what it would take to get recommended — measured in enquiries, not rankings. No obligation. No sales pitch.
